第九十章 裁員名單過玻璃，萬利門內各自寒

金融海嘯後的萬利門，最可怕的不是嘈。

是靜。

以前 bullpen 早上八點半已經有人罵 printer、有人搶 conference room、有人在 speakerphone 上大叫「can you hear me」。現在同一層樓，咖啡機的聲音大到像市場公告。

星期一，HR 的玻璃房外面，多了一排人。

沒有人排得很直。

大家都假裝自己只是路過。

Marcus 坐在座位上，看著一份 list。

不是 deal list。

是 seating plan。

有些名字旁邊多了小小灰色標記。

郭正行走過去。

「咩嚟？」

Marcus 合上 file。

「Furniture migration。」

郭正行看著他。

Marcus 才補一句：「人走，凳會移。」

這句比裁員兩個字更難聽。

Raymond 從 conference room 出來，tie 歪了一點。以前他永遠不會讓 tie 歪。現在他似乎已經不想同布料打仗。

「Jenson，十點半，post-crisis client review。」

「邊個 client？」

Raymond 看著他。

「All of them。」

Nancy 的 office 門開著。

她桌上堆滿 engagement letters、conflict memos、closing files。她把一張 paper clip 拉直，再夾回去。

郭正行站在門口。

「你 okay？」

Nancy 沒抬頭。

「No。」

他一時不知道怎樣答。

Nancy 抬頭。

「See？Short answers save time。」

她把一份 memo 推給他。

`Post-Crisis Mandate Intake Protocol`

下面有三條：

`1. Who is paying?`

`2. Who is relying?`

`3. Who will be blamed when it fails?`

郭正行看著第三條。

「以前無寫得咁直接。」

Nancy 說：「以前大家比較有錢，可以講得好聽。」

中午，Wendy 拿著飯盒坐到他旁邊。

「你哋 upstairs 今日咁靜？」

郭正行說：「你哋 downstairs 呢？」

Wendy 打開飯盒。

「Downstairs 唔靜。只係啲人講嘢細聲咗。以前個個話自己有 flow，依家個個問自己會唔會有 floor。」

「Floor？」

「跌到地下嗰個 floor。」

郭正行笑了一聲。

Wendy 看他。

「笑得出，算係有 pulse。」

下午，Raymond 召集 surviving team。

房裡少了幾張熟面孔。

Raymond 沒有講 inspirational speech。

他只說：「Market changed. Clients changed. We changed. But if we are still here, we do the work properly。」

Marcus 補一句：「And we write down why。」

Wendy 說：「And we don't pretend a bad book is a good book just because someone important wants it hot。」

Nancy 看她。

「Put that in Latin, I may approve。」

房裡第一次有人笑。

笑完，又靜下來。

郭正行望住玻璃外面的中環。

以前他以為 surviving 是一種勝利。

現在他知道，surviving 只是市場問你的下一條問題。

你還在。

所以你還要答。

那天下午，HR 的白信封陸續離開樓層。

沒有人大聲哭。

投行樓層最殘忍的地方，是大家連崩潰都懂得壓低音量。

一個 second-year associate 收拾枱面時，把一本 analyst training manual 留低。

封面寫著：

`Execution Excellence`

Wendy 望了一眼。

「Execution excellence includes knowing when your seat is gone？」

沒有人答。

她自己也沒有再講。

因為這句太苦，苦到連 Wendy 都覺得不應該拿來做笑話。

郭正行幫那個 associate 把 drawer 裡剩下的 name card 放入 envelope。對方說 thank you，語氣很平，好像只是請他傳一份 file。

等人走後，Marcus 在 pantry 貼了一張紙。

`Do not ask people where they are going unless they volunteer.`

Andy 看見，低聲說：「Marcus 都有人性。」

Marcus 從後面經過。

「I heard that。」

Andy 立刻拿起杯。

「我講 humanity is a control。」

Marcus 看他一眼。

「Weak save。」

這種笑聲在今天很珍貴。

晚一點，Nancy 開了一個 short session。

不是 legal training。

她只列出海嘯後幾個 recurring mistakes：

`Do not call liquidity temporary unless cash source is identified.`

`Do not call support committed unless signed.`

`Do not rely on brand names as credit analysis.`

`Do not allow client optimism to become bank language.`

她講得很乾。

但每一句都像從 Paper Lantern 的傷口裡剪出來。

Raymond 坐在後排，一直沒有插嘴。

到最後，他才說：「大家記住，post-crisis market 唔係更聰明。只係更易驚。怕的人有時會問好問題，有時會問錯問題。我們要分得開。」

郭正行在 notebook 寫下：

`Fear is not evidence. Confidence is not evidence.`

他停了一下，又加：

`Survival is not innocence.`

那晚，萬利門請留下來的人吃簡單晚飯。

不是慶祝。

比較像喪禮後大家不知該回家還是繼續坐一會。

Raymond 拿起紙杯。

「No speech。」

Wendy 說：「你已經 speech 咗。」

Raymond 看她。

「Then short speech。」

大家終於笑。

他說：「To people not in the room。」

所有人靜了。

紙杯碰紙杯，聲音很輕。

郭正行想起 Brian。

Brian 沒有被裁。

Brian 是自己慢慢走出這個房間。

這比白信封更難歸類。

晚上，他和 Yoyo 在電話裡講起裁員。

他沒有講名字，只講感覺。

Yoyo 聽完，說：「你不要因為自己留下，就覺得自己欠所有離開的人。」

「很難。」

「我知。但你如果把 survivor guilt 當成工作燃料，好快會燒壞。」

郭正行望著桌上的 cold pizza。

「你最近很像 risk committee。」

「Peach Blossom 都有 risk committee。」

「你係 chair？」

「我是會問最煩問題的人。」

他笑了。

笑完，她輕聲說：「你可以難過。不要把難過包裝成 duty。」

這句刺中他。

因為他這幾年最擅長的事，就是把任何痛苦改名做工作。

掛線後，他把 notebook 翻到新一頁。

寫：

`Post-crisis rule: Do not turn grief into mandate.`

寫完，他看著那行字很久。

窗外的中環沒有因為裁員而暗下來。

市場從不替任何人熄燈。

所以人要自己記得，哪些燈是工作，哪些燈是回家的路。

幾日後，萬利門重新分配座位。

這是比裁員 email 更殘忍的環節。

因為空位會被人正式填平。

Facilities team 把幾張 desk 移走，留下地毯上顏色較深的方形印。

像有人曾經坐過的證據。

郭正行幫 Andy 搬一箱 file。

Andy 說：「你覺不覺得 office 變大咗？」

「嗯。」

「以前覺得逼，現在覺得冷。」

這句不像 Andy。

郭正行看他。

Andy 立刻補：「當然，我個人仍然需要更多 legroom。」

「你可以不補笑位。」

「不補會死。」

他們把 file 放入新 cabinet。

其中一疊是 old pitch material。

`Pre-Crisis Credit Opportunities`

`Structured Yield Solutions`

每個 title 都像來自另一個年代。

Wendy 經過，看見那疊 pitch。

「Keep them？」

Marcus 說：「Archive。」

Wendy 說：「Or burn。」

Nancy 從房裡出來。

「Archive first. Burn after limitation period。」

大家又笑。

笑聲比前幾天自然了一點。

下午，Raymond 把郭正行叫進房。

「你 next arc 會更辛苦。」

郭正行一時未反應。

Raymond 把 pipeline list 翻到最後。

一行字：

`Potential sovereign-linked infrastructure IPO`

沒有名字。

但已經有重量。

Raymond 說：「Post-crisis market wants one big clean story. If this comes, everyone will want to believe。」

「Clean story 通常不 clean？」

「不是。Clean story 可以是真的。」Raymond 看著他，「問題係，越真，越容易令人放棄問問題。」

郭正行點頭。

「Golden Bun 我哋怕公司太細。Silk Road 我哋怕資料太亂。Dragon Gate 我哋怕市場太熱。Paper Lantern 我哋怕產品太複雜。」Raymond 說，「下一單，如果來，最危險係大家覺得它太大，不應該錯。」

那句話令房間靜了。

Raymond 又說：「你休息，不是因為可以鬆。是因為後面要你醒。」

郭正行走出房時，看到 Marcus 正在更新 deal intake checklist。

新增一欄：

`Narrative risk`

他問：「這是甚麼？」

Marcus 說：「When story becomes evidence in people's heads。」

「可以量化？」

「No. That's why dangerous。」

晚上，郭正行在 notebook 寫：

`Narrative risk: the market's desire to stop asking.`

他想起成吉瀚未到的風。

也想起 Brian 在另一座城市學另一種速度。

萬利門裁員後冷了。

但有些冷，能令人醒。

他希望自己不要太快懷念熱。
